What Sophia says about the Bachelor's in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science
Sophia from Australia
About the programme and the teaching style
What do you think of your programme so far?
"I think it is a lot more mathematically and physics based than expected, as opposed to the idea that it was going to be more ecosystem and background to land formation based. It is still super interesting and exciting, but just in a different way than I initially thought it would be. "
What is the best thing about your programme?
"It is a small programme, so you get to know almost everyone and work as a team. We also have some cool field trips throughout the year which broaden your understanding with each course."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I think the teaching style is good because it is laid back, but still structured enough to not stray off track. I love how the professors/lecturers want the best for the students and give you chances to correct and prove yourself within the course."
How international is your programme?
"This course is an international course, so we have students from all over the world, a lot from Europe such as the Baltics, Balkans, Cyprus, and then some from America and Canada. We also have Swedish students blended into the mix."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"We have had a handful of field trips out to nature reserves where we are taught how to use different types of equipment and learn how to take samples and identify features 'in the wild' that we may have been shown in lectures!"
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"I think students should choose this programme because we are a tight-knit community of individuals who are passionate about doing something other than a conventional desk job or course where you are stuck indoors all day! The programme teaches you how the world works, and as the global climate crisis is progressing more people should learn about it. It also allows for conversations on more than just one topic."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"As a half-Swedish half-Australian individual, it is, for me, the best of both worlds because the international community is so welcoming and there is always something to do with groups or alone, like getting a 'fika' (coffee break) and discovering more of the Swedish culture. "
What do you do in your spare time?
"I like to go on hikes/long walks in different nature reserves throughout Skåne and play sports with the Australian community in Malmö!"
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"So far, interacting with all the new people and going out on field trips has been the highlight because you learn so much from each other about the course content and the rest of the world! "
Do you have any advice for students who are considering coming to Lund?
"Pack clothes for all seasons, not just the season you're supposed to be coming into, because you can almost guarantee to experience all four seasons in one day! Also, immerse yourself in every social and/or academic opportunity you get so that you can get your name out there and have fun!"
