What Yujin says about the Master's in Service Management, Sustainable Service Management
Introducing Yujin
Hi! My name is Yujin and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Service Management, Sustainable Service Management. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
Why did you choose Lund University?
"Since I study sustainability management, I looked for schools with the keyword 'sustainability'. Also, sustainability rankings have recently been published and Lund University has been highly ranked. There was no reason not to choose Lund since it's an international school which provides a 100% English-taught programme."
What are your first impressions of your programme? Does it meet your expectations?
"My first impression was that my programme is really international. There are about 20 students in my specialisation, and each student has had really different experiences around the world. The first month I was busy learning about everything new. It's only been two months, so it's hard to see if it meets my expectations yet, but it certainly met my goal of studying in English with multinational students."
What have been the highlights of your first months in Lund?
"The first month was a series of nice weather and events at the end of summer. The school prepares many fun events for new students, so I hope you take part. Other than that, I found my favourite park in Lund. I think it was amazing to experience a hectic first month."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I can say that the Swedish teaching style focuses on freedom and responsibility. The answer is not just given so you have to work hard to find a solution that leads you to the right answer. Although this is probably very different from the way you've been previously taught, there is a way to make sure you succeed, so don't worry."
How international is your programme?
"My favourite thing about my programme is that my classmates are international. I am very interested in that part because everyone has different life experiences that make us handle things and understand certain issues in different ways. I think this experience will be useful for my future career."
What are you most looking forward to in your programme?
"I am looking forward to learning about sustainability in various fields. In our programme, professors from other faculties and various fields often give lectures on sustainability. I am eager to learn more about each one and decide which field to focus on."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"The most practical project I’ve done was writing an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) report in Assessment of Environmental Impact (SMMX27). During the project, calculating the ecological footprint of our chosen project – glasses and contact lenses in my case – alongside creating visualised data through related software, was really interesting."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If you want to study social sustainability, this programme is a great opportunity. While sustainability from an environmental and economic perspective is widely discussed, social sustainability is an area that requires more attention and discussion than ever. Since sustainability is not limited to one area, I recommend it if you want to expand your boundaries through this programme."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"In my case, since I am from Korea, the language and culture are really different here. In Lund, you can comfortably communicate, live, and study in English, and international students here are sociable and have a high percentage of 'Yes! let's go!' when I suggest something. There will be no time to be bored during the two years in Lund."
What do you do in your spare time?
"A good habit I’ve developed since moving to Lund is going to the gym and running regularly. I also enjoy the Swedish ‘fika’ (coffee break) culture. I organise activities to spend time with my friends, such as bowling, bouldering, and sauna. I also enjoy travelling around Europe when I get the chance."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Saying “yes” more often has been a highlight! Thanks to the student ambassador and international mentor programmes, I met tons of international students from all over the world and could see a variety of lives I’d never heard of. After a year in Lund, I’m more open-minded and less afraid to try new things."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Before coming to Lund, I recommend you to find out about Lund using Unibuddy or LinkedIn. Not only is it much easier to adapt to Lund, but your future will be much better illustrated if you look for what subjects you will study and which students are in the programme. This will be a great driving force for you to apply for Lund, come to Lund, and finish your studies in Lund."
