What Lewis says about the Master's in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures
Lewis from Australia – Alumni
Lewis studied the specialisation ‘Spatial Experiments’ – previously offered in the Master's programme in Architecture. The new Master's programme, Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures, mainly build on that specialisation. Since the alumni of this interview studied ‘Spatial Experiments’, he has studied the majority of the courses currently offered in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures.
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in the spring semester of 2019 at Lund University."
What was your experience of the programme and the learning environment?
"I loved studying in Sweden. I was initially there as part of the exchange programme from the University of Western Australia, however, I ended up transferring and completing my Master's of Architecture there. I found the spatial experimentation programme an incredibly exciting course that looked at architecture from a completely new perspective. The freedom that came from not just exploring but creating new methods of design and construction was wonderfully refreshing and a great thing to be a part of. The learning environment at Lund is unique in that it brings together a wide range of students from across the world. This generates a rich shared learning experience which I found unlike anywhere else and immensely beneficial for the creative process. The opportunities to go on school trips to London and Morocco were for me one of the highlights of the programme."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"I’m currently working as a graduate architect for an office called ‘MJA Studio’ in Perth, Western Australia. We work on a wide range of projects typologies including Student Housing, Multi-residential, Mixed-use Hospitality, Seniors living and the odd Wavegarden surf park or two."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"Australia, and Perth in particular, have incredibly unsustainably sprawling suburbia with the average person living on large lots in large houses with our cities designed around the car. Our studio works hard at challenging these values by creating high-quality small scale homes in the form of apartments and townhouses with the hope of creating a denser, more sustainable and community rich built environment."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund University?
"I miss everything about Lund and Sweden. I had the most wonderful time and am so grateful I was able to complete my Master’s there. I miss how beautiful the city of Lund is and all my lovely friends there who I hope to go back and see in the not-too-distant future."
