What Anshul says about the Master's in Embedded Electronics Engineering
Anshul from India
Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
"My name is Anshul, and I'm from India, where I completed my Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering in 2022."
Why did you choose Lund University and why did this particular programme appeal to you?
"I have always been drawn to fields that allow me to engage with both software and hardware components, and embedded electronics perfectly encapsulates this intersection for me. The Master's programme in Embedded Electronics caught my attention due to its distinct blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on skill development. Additionally, the presence of numerous embedded companies in close proximity to the campus paints a promising picture for international students like myself, offering exciting prospects for future career opportunities."
About the programme and the academic environment
Why should prospective students choose this programme? Do you have a favourite course?
"The programme provides a structured framework for students to establish their fundamentals in electronics while sharpening their skills through immersive, hands-on projects spanning a considerable duration (4 months). These projects not only solidify acquired knowledge but also prepare students for the demands of the industry. Personally, I found the Computer Architecture and IC Project 1 particularly enriching. Despite their challenges, they provided invaluable learning experiences within a condensed timeframe."
What do you think of the teaching style and the way of studying here? What are the lecturers and professors like?
"The teaching approach in this Master's programme aligns perfectly with what one would expect at this level of education. It fosters an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions and to not only grasp theoretical principles but also to apply them towards optimising systems. Throughout the programme, emphasis is placed on understanding design methodologies and navigating the trade-offs inherent in real-world scenarios. The lectures and support from Teaching Assistants (TAs) play a pivotal role in refining the skills essential for success in the semiconductor industry."
What is the academic environment like?
"The academic atmosphere is incredibly enriching, with lectures delivered by highly proficient professors who not only teach but also inspire students. Moreover, the programme benefits from guest lectures by industry experts from renowned companies such as Ericsson, Axis Communications, and Nordic Semiconductors, who impart invaluable insights on key industry topics. Additionally, the presence of extensive career fairs, featuring over 250 companies, provides ample opportunities for interested students to explore various career paths and engage with potential employers."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies so far?
"This programme stands out for fostering a problem-solving mindset, considering real-world trade-offs. For instance, in the IC Project, my teammate and I built a 5-stage RISC-V processor. This experience developed our skills while navigating practical constraints, preparing us for the challenges ahead."
Have you had any opportunities for networking within the programme? Do you work with companies?
"At Lund, we benefit from a vibrant ecosystem of industry giants such as Ericsson, Axis Communications, ARM, Nordic Semiconductors, and Xenergic, offering attractive summer internships and Master's thesis opportunities. Personally, I was fortunate to secure a summer internship at Ericsson in 2023, where I gained invaluable insights while working on live projects under mentorship. Currently, I am undertaking my Master's thesis at Ericsson, an exhilarating opportunity that promises to be both challenging and rewarding."
What it is like to be an international student at Lund University and how international is your programme?
"As an international student, I have the privilege of engaging with diverse perspectives and collaborating with individuals from all corners of the globe. The Swedish student community at Lund University is exceptionally inclusive, fostering a welcoming environment that eases the transition into both the programme and the local lifestyle. Within my programme, I have the pleasure of interacting with students from a multitude of countries, including India, China, Greece, Azerbaijan, Syria, Turkey, Africa, and beyond, making it truly an international cohort."
What is studying in Sweden like compared to studying in other countries you studied in?
"Compared to my academic experience in India, studying in Sweden feels more collaborative and hands-on. Here, the lectures and examination system prioritise the practical application of course principles over mere memorisation. This approach encourages deeper understanding and real-world problem-solving skills, fostering a more dynamic and engaging learning environment."
What are you planning to do after your studies?
"I'm eager to dive into the semiconductor industry and specialise in microchip design. Given the pivotal role chips play in shaping the 21st century, I'm drawn to the dynamic and impactful nature of this field. My goal is to contribute to the advancement of technology and be a part of the innovative developments driving progress in our digital age."
Thoughts on student life
If you were to recommend any of our campus cities (Lund, Malmö and Helsingborg) to someone, what would you say?
"Lund offers an unparalleled student life experience, with its vibrant atmosphere fuelled by a constant buzz of activities occurring seven days a week. Meanwhile, Malmö exudes big city vibes, boasting an array of exciting venues to explore, indulge in delicious cuisine, and create unforgettable memories. On the other hand, Helsingborg is my favourite, seamlessly blending modernity with the charm of its historic streets. Together, these cities offer a comprehensive Swedish experience, combining the best of both worlds for an enriching and diverse cultural journey."
How do you like living in Sweden? Did you feel welcome here? Was there anything that surprised you about Sweden?
"Transitioning from India, where we have only three seasons, Sweden has been a refreshing change. Here, we get to fully experience the beauty of all four seasons, each transforming the city's landscape every 4-5 months. What surprised me the most is the pedestrian-friendly culture, where cars actually wait for you to cross the road, a stark contrast to what I was accustomed to."
What are the highlights of your time here so far?
"My time here at Lund has been filled with countless memorable moments, but some of the highlights stand out vividly. One of these highlights includes the deep bonds forged with my course mates during our extended hours in the lab, collaborating and overcoming challenges together. Additionally, the summer days spent exploring the picturesque Skåne region with the convenience of the summer pass provided moments of pure bliss and unforgettable adventures."
Do you have any advice for other students that are considering coming here?
"Here's my advice: embrace the spirit of exploration, both academically and socially. Lund University and Sweden as a whole offer a warm welcome, encouraging you to delve into your interests. Take the opportunity to discover the stunning Skåne region with its myriad hiking trails and breathtaking landscapes. And don't forget about the cherished tradition of fika – Swedish breaks filled with sweets and coffee. So, dive in, explore, and make the most of your time here!"
