What Anna-Maria says about the Master's in Energy-efficient and Environmental Building Design
Introducing Anna-Maria
Hi! My name is Anna-Maria and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Energy-efficient and Environmental Building Design. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"When I started applying for Master’s degrees, my main concern was to find a programme that really suited my interest. One of the universities that offered this was Lund University. What really made me choose Lund, apart from its high ranking, was the interest the coordinators and the university itself showed in the prospective students. They welcomed us and gave us a lot of information about what to expect."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"I would say that my programme is more intense than I imagined. However, this is not a negative thing, as it really makes you focus and study the wide variety of topics discussed. It also provides a lot of study sessions with friends and group mates which usually end up being both fun and helpful for understanding the topics together."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"I really like the wide range of knowledge I am getting from my programme. There are a lot of new things that my previous degree never touched on before. Moreover, the diversity of the students makes it unique since you meet people from all around the world."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is pretty relaxed. It is nice that you are able to call your professors by their first names, ending the faceless relationships and hierarchy in the educational system. Personally, I feel much more comfortable asking questions and seeking help this way."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is quite international, with people from all around the world. In my year, there are students from at least ten different countries. This is really exciting for me since it’s the first time I am studying in such an international environment."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Since I am still in my first year, I don't have that much of hands-on experience yet. However, we have had laboratory sessions and field trips where we got to see and try different things that are actually applied in real life. I am waiting to see what is next to come with eagerness."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Prospective students should choose this programme because of the wide variety of knowledge it provides. Furthermore, energy efficiency is a topic that engages the whole world. When it is paired with the building sector, as it is in this programme, it becomes an extremely interesting and tangible field of study. Whoever is interested in sustainable design along with energy efficiency should really consider this option."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"I would say it is really exciting. In my previous education, I never had the chance to study in such an international environment. I have made friends from every corner of the earth."
What do you do in your spare time?
"Usually, I hang out with my friends – either in Lund or Malmö – and join student's nation (social clubs) events. I really like biking around Lund when the weather is nice. Lately, I have been thinking about joining one of the music groups since I have seen a lot of fun stuff going on there."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"The highlights of my first year were definitely the fun activities I had with all of the amazing people I've met. The snowy days and the celebrations before Christmas break (Santa Lucia day) were definitely remarkable!"
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"I would advise them to go for it! Lund University's community is amazing, fun, and exciting. Apart from that, the university offers a great range of Master's programmes to choose from, all of them provide high quality education. I truly hope – and I can slightly promise – that in Lund, you will find exactly what you're looking for!"
