What André says about the Master's in Machine Learning, Systems and Control
André from Hungary
Why did you choose this programme?
"I have studied a Bachelor’s in Mechatronics engineering and was interested in control and machine learning. So, when I was searching for programmes, I found this programme at Lund University and I decided to come."
How do you like the programme so far?
"It's been very nice so far and I am very satisfied. This programme is very much a ‘build your own degree’-type of programme. There are a lot of elective courses and projects which allows you to focus on your interests. For example, I have gone more into mathematics-based and machine learning courses."
What do you think about the teaching style?
"The lecturers have all been very good, unfortunately, I came during Covid, so a lot of the lecturers have been online. Fortunately, a lot of the lectures were recorded, allowing me to re-watch some of the content. In particular, for a few of the courses, it came in handy to be able to watch through what the professors were saying to understand the material even better."
How would you describe the academic environment?
"It is very cooperative. The professors really want you to succeed and your fellow students aren’t against you – they are with you. At my previous university, we are also quite cooperative, but I often felt that there was an approach where the professors worked against the students and not with them."
How international is your programme?
"I would say it is quite international. We are a pretty small programme, so of course, you can’t have people representing every country in the world but we do have a pretty wide representation. We have people from India, China and a few different countries in Africa. There are also some European and South American students."
Has the programme given you any practical experience?
"The programme isn’t finished yet, but I have managed to obtain two internships during this programme. It helped a lot to have professors that help us find contacts. They suggested a few places to apply to and there have been a few job fairs that help with networking."
What is it like to be an international student at Lund?
"I would say it’s excellent! The various student nations and societies work on integrating us into the student life here in Lund. And of course, there is still a bit of a language barrier, but almost every Swede here in Lund is fluent in English. You can definitely make Swedish friends and when it comes to international friends, there are so many different things to do, even during the Covid pandemic, that you will undoubtedly end up with friends."
Do you have any advice for future students?
"Go for it! That's the first one. Make sure to take an active part in the student life as soon as possible, and reaching out to other international students is always a good idea."
What were the highlights of your studies in Lund?
"At LTH (Faculty of Engineering), we have this ‘guild’ system for arranging business and leisure activities, which is extremely fun. The introductory month is an absolute blast. I would say that was the highlight of my student life so far."
How do you like living in Sweden?
"Sweden is very inclusive. In general, Sweden and Lund are very friendly places. It is a bit tough sometimes to go with the bureaucracy as it required some paperwork coming to Sweden. But that was the only part that I had any issues with. Otherwise, everyone speaks English, people are welcoming and very friendly (even though the stereotype might say otherwise). Nature is beautiful here and there are endless opportunities here and at the same time, it's very calm and peaceful."
Do you have any plans after your studies?
"I am working towards pursuing a PhD here in Lund. I still have to do my Master’s thesis but it would be nice to do something that could lead to a PhD. If that doesn’t work out, then I’ll definitely be able to find a place to work. I have no particular company in mind but through my contacts, I have been in touch with some companies here in Lund."
