What Kika says about the Master's in Strategic Communication
Introducing Kika
Hi! My name is Martha and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Strategic Communication. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because of its reputation for research, innovation, and high academic standards. Initially, I was interested in pursuing a Master's in Public Relations, but during my search, I discovered the Strategic Communication programme. What stood out to me was its unique combination of three major disciplines and the way it blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Since this course is relatively new, not many universities offer it, and Lund was one of the first institutions I came across that provides such a practical and interdisciplinary approach. This made my decision an easy one."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"My programme is unmatched when it comes to analysing the difference between what I expected and what I am getting. Although the educational system here differs from what I'm used to in my home country, the lecturers do an excellent job of engaging everyone and helping us adjust quickly. The use of group work during lectures and projects allows me to view subjects from various perspectives. Additionally, since it’s an international programme, I can interact with classmates from all over the world, which provides valuable practical career preparation in strategic communication."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"What I love most about my programme is its diversity, both in the course content and the learning approach. The programme is practical and grounded in real-world scenarios, showing that there’s often more than one perspective on any given topic. This encourages me to keep an open mind and learn how to communicate effectively in different contexts, skills that will be essential for my future career."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style here is quite different from what I’m used to. It focuses more on interactive and practical learning rather than purely theoretical concepts. Lecturers encourage us to share ideas and think critically, which creates a relaxed, open, and creative environment. There’s a good balance between independent learning and the support we receive from lecturers."
How international is your programme?
"My programme has an international vibe, with classmates from almost every continent. The different perspectives they bring to discussions make it super interesting and give me a feel for those countries. It’s not just about learning the theories behind strategic communication but also seeing how different cultures approach it."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Oh, definitely! We’ve done a lot. During the programme, we’ve consulted for Malmö Stad, pitched to Helsingborg Konserthus, and had other hands-on experiences. We’re always working on real-world cases and projects that let us apply the theories we learn directly. Plus, we get to hear from guest speakers and attend workshops with industry professionals, so it’s not just classroom learning. We get a feel for how things work in the real world."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The programme is like a buy-one-get-two-free deal - you sign up for one, but you get three major social science fields in one go: Public Relations, Organisational Communication, and Marketing. This combination doesn’t just open doors; it gives you a deep understanding that makes it easy to work in any sector and stay flexible. The mix of theory, hands-on projects, and a global perspective makes it truly unique. Plus, the chance to network with professionals and classmates from all over the world is priceless. It’s the kind of environment that pushes you to grow both academically and personally."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Being an international student in Lund is cool. The community is super inclusive, and you can really feel the sense of connection. There are so many programmes and events just for international students, making it easier to settle in, feel at home, and just vibe with everything. It’s more than just studying; it’s about being part of something welcoming and fun."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time, I love checking out new spots in Helsingborg and Lund - there's so much to see! I also enjoy taking short trips around Sweden to explore new places. But when it gets really cold, I usually just settle in with a good novel or binge-watch some movies."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"My first year has been amazing! I've met so many incredible people from different cultures and learning Swedish has been such a cool challenge. I’ve learned a lot, not just about my studies, but about communicating in a global way. Plus, experiencing Swedish traditions like Lucia in December was such a highlight."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Honestly, my advice would be to jump in and make the most of your time here. Go for all the events you can, and don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone. You’ll meet people from around the world and learn so much more than just what’s in your books. Also, enjoy the Swedish traditions - they really add something special to the experience."
