What Rooh says about the Master's in Strategic Communication
Introducing Rooh
Hi! My name is Rooh and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Strategic Communication. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University for two reasons. Firstly, to actualise my fullest potential merging my practical field experience with world-class academic research specific to SDG 12.9 (editors note: refers to one of the targets set within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals). Secondly, I wanted to be immersed in an authentic Swedish experience within the powerhouse of Scandinavian innovation, research, and internationalisation."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"In three words, my programme has been eye-opening, challenging, and enriching. Since I came in with an open mind and willingness to learn, I was not rigid about what to expect. In this way, the process so far has been more exploratory than anything else."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The holistic approach and interdisciplinary input."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style empowers you to be the architect of your future. At the Master's level, it is expected that you are capable of independent study and so the teaching style supports the development of critical thinking and is geared towards deep learning. Here, special emphasis is placed on reflexivity and cooperation through group-based projects. Since equality is preferred in Sweden, the hierarchy is flat, so students are encouraged to call professors by their first name."
How international is your programme?
"In my cohort, we have students from about 25 different countries spanning 4 continents."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes. Thanks to a 'fika' (coffee break) during introduction week, I landed an internship with Helsingborg International Connections (HIC). HIC exists to help professionals and students onboard to life in Sweden. As a social media intern, I post on the 'new in town' point of view."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"If your goal is to be a catalyst rather than a doer of checklist duties, you should choose the Master of Science in Strategic Communication. This programme is rigorous, but you will become adept in intercultural settings and sophisticated in the art of oral and written argument."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"From my experience, being an international student at Lund University can be summed up in three words – exhilarating, daunting, and illuminating."
What do you do in your spare time?
"In my spare time I sauna, fika, take long walks by the Helsingborg marina, and follow 'Melodifestivalen' (Swedish version of Eurovision Song Contest) through joint watch parties with friends."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"In my first year in Lund, I have been able to become an LU Student Ambassador and create social events, as an Event Committee member of Samhällsvetarkåren (Social Sciences Student Union), to help new students (Novisch students) integrate and make friends. I have also attended 'ful-sittnings' and 'fin-sittnings' (editors note: student dinners, a typical Swedish student tradition) at most of the major student nations. Another highlight was planning my first Swedish Spring Ball as a member of the Stampus Ball Committee in Helsingborg and I getting the chance to see Jordan Peterson live at the Malmö Arena."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Jump in with both feet, no regrets and a 'can-do, will-try' attitude. Despite the inevitable challenges that you will face, choose to live the experience you want to have whilst you are here because this is a life-changing journey worth making."
