Author
Summary, in English
Title:
Environmental certification of buildings with Miljöbyggnad, Green Building, BREEAM and LEED
- A review of the methods with comprehensive comparison
Problem:
Today's environmental problems must be solved in order to spare future generations and the environment. Environmental certification is a part of the solution.
So what is the point with environmental certification and what reasons are there to apply the methodology? How does the common environmental certification methods in Sweden work? What stands out the most common methods in Sweden against each other?
Purpose:
The purpose of this report is to describe what it means to environmentally certify a building. The report discusses how various environmental certification methods work and how the work methodology for certification looks. Since there are different environmental certification practices, the aim is also to make an overall comparison between the methods.
Method:
To carry out this work it will be implemented document studies. Document studies done primarily in the official documents Swedish Green Building Council provides on its website. Document studies will contribute to an inventory of the most common environmental certification methods are performed. The inventory enables the methods to be compared based on relevant factors. Literature studies in the form of earlier theses and scientific articles and various summed writings on environmental certification methods will be studied. To supplement the Swedish Green Building Council will
iv
also U. S Green Building Council to be taken into account to a limited extent.
Conclusion:
Environmental certification means assessing a building based on certain environmental perspective and then rate the building. Environmental certification strives to produce buildings that are sustainable and green, which means that the buildings will be environmentally friendly and healthy, but also reliable and economical.
There are many reasons to environmental certification but the biggest reason is to reduce environmental impact and improve the health of people.
The most common environmental certification methods in Sweden are Green Building, Miljöbyggnad, BREEAM and LEED. All methods handled by Swedish Green Building Council, which is responsible for certification of buildings according to these methods.
The comparison between the methods clearly shows that BREEAM is the method most extensive. BREEAM handle very many assessment areas while Miljöbyggnad handle the less. Green Building only handles energy and stands out the worst compared to the other methods. LEED is between BREEAM and Green Building in current number of relevant assessment topics.
