About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I aspired to pursue an international Master’s degree after completing my undergraduate courses, which led me to do a lot of research about different universities in Sweden. After a review of the list of universities and the accolades they carry, my immediate first choice was Lund University as it is ranked within the 100 best universities worldwide, with an international diverse atmosphere and amazing campus environment. The heritage and legacy of the university instantly pointed its commitment towards quality education and the holistic development of its students. Lund University was simply a class apart with an impeccable record."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"The programme is very flexible with the syllabus and elective courses which gives us the chance to explore and learn disciplines of our interest. It exceeds my expectations as it offers an internationally diverse understanding of water issues around the globe and aims for better and efficient use of water resources. The programme is a much-needed course in today’s scenarios, especially when I look at the drought affecting my hometown Bangalore, India."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"My programme is structured to reduce the burden for students. It offers plenty of time and opportunity to study and gain practical knowledge about the issues around the globe. I truly value and enjoy the site visits included in the courses which give us practical experience. The university also has exceptionally devoted professors with immense knowledge and experience which makes the programme interesting and creates a supportive atmosphere."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is very different from my home country. Here, there are two to three courses per study period which spans for 10 to 20 weeks with a written examination or presentation at the end of the course. The semester is divided into two study periods, which makes it easier for students to focus and have spare time for some extracurricular activities of their interest."
How international is your programme?
"The programme has drawn international students from across the world, which I think brings about different perspectives to the classroom and shows the relevance of the programme in modern day society. Unlike other courses or programmes, water resources engineering is truly a field which draws global attention to solve the increasing water crises in many countries. The programme also offers various international content such as “Integrated Water Resources Management” and “Climate Change” courses which provide the opportunity to understand different global issues related to water."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Apart from theory classes, the course also includes practical classes such as study visits, laboratory experiments, debate sessions and project reports with role play of different stake holders. We even had company representatives give lectures about the practical application and the issues faced in the real world. Overall, with the lectures and webinars organised by the department allow us to gain practical experiences."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"'Bright future begins with clean water.' The Water Resources Engineering programme touches on all the prospective and complex challenges associated with water management and environmental sustainability with global perspectives. Water is a necessity that many countries struggle with today and the world needs more water engineers. It’s a field that is inseparable from human life and designed to better humanity. It is one of the few courses that offers an opportunity to contribute and give back to the society."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"As an international student at Lund University, I enjoy the international diversity the campus has to offer with numerous nations, societies, and activities outside of academia organised by the university. We have an opportunity to understand and learn different cultures and make friends from all over the world, as well as explore and travel Sweden."
What do you do in your spare time?
"Since Lund has green space, I love to go on walks and enjoy the calm peace the nature provides. As it is a small town, meeting up with friends for fika or to do outdoor activities together are some fun things to do. I personally love to explore places around Lund and spend some time catching up with family and friends back home."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"Experiencing different seasons was very exciting for me. I have made some amazing international friends and shared great times together. Experiencing different cultures and climates was the highlight of my first year."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Be prepared for the very beautiful adventure Lund has to offer. Be open to learning and socialising with your classmates, you never know what you’ll learn. Engage yourself in other activities apart from academia because Lund’s student societies offer lots of interesting activities and get-together events which are important for international students."
