What Clemens says about the Master's in Water Resources Engineering
Clemens from Germany – alumnus of the programme
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in 2018."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"Currently, I am employed as an industrial PhD in Lund, but my main research area is located in Småland, Sweden."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"Searching for a job took about 3-4 months, but finding my current one happened in a matter of weeks. During my Master’s thesis, I was asked if I could imagine working as a PhD."
Favorite thing about your job? What is your thesis about?
"As I research the natural environment I really like to be out in the field. Not only for taking measurements but also to talking to local people and getting to know their view on the problem, which may not always be very scientific but it can help to understand the bigger picture."
My PhD thesis is about the influence of hydrodynamics and hydrology on the brownification of Sweden’s twelfth largest lake, which is used as a raw water resource for the larger part of Skåne."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"Changing the industry or the world seems such a huge thing one can do, but in some way or the other, I feel confident to say that my research helps to shape a more sustainable world and rises the awareness to take care of our most vulnerable resource, water, even more."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"It is very hard to pinpoint one specific thing, but something that was very useful was the broad knowledge, the idea to develop and have a holistic view on specific problems."
What do you miss most from your time at the programme? What were the highlights of your study time at Lund?
"Mostly I miss the people I studied with and the great time we shared together. One of the highlights was for sure the gala hosted by LTH (the Faculty of Engineering) at the end of our studies."
How international was your programme?
"My programme was very international, we had students from almost every part of the globe."
What was the focus of your degree project?
"During my degree project, I focused on hydrodynamics and its influences on the morphology of a lagoon estuary in Iceland."
Why do you think prospective students should choose the Water Resources Engineering programme?
"Because it is a very interesting programme and since water is the foundation of life, you will always have a bright future working in the field."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"Even though almost everybody in Sweden speaks English and one’s long-term plan may not be to stay in Sweden, I highly recommend learning Swedish. It is not only a beautiful language, but it will also widen the possibilities and experience during your time in Sweden."
