Psychology: The Science of Psychedelic

Description

Interest in psychedelic drugs such as Psilocybin, LSD and MDMA has increased significantly in recent years, as studies point to potential medical and personality development benefits. Research results show that psychedelic-assisted therapy provides major improvements on therapy-resistant patients with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress syndrome as well as on quality of life. The Science of Psychedelics course provides a critical introduction to the science of psychedelics.

Course content

The course provides an academic general introduction to the science of psychedelics. It covers the neuroscience behind the effects of various psychedelic substances on consciousness, experiences, neurotransmitters, and brain activity (fMRI and EEG). The course also covers approaches to psychedelic-assisted therapy and its outcomes, as well as societal and ethical aspects of use. If you work in public health, health care, social work or law enforcement, you have a potential interest in learning about psychedelics, as awareness and use in society increases.

During the course you will gain insight into:

  • The science of psychedelics
  • How psychedelics affect states of consciousness, emotions, cognition, and behaviour
  • The ability of psychedelics to influence therapeutic outcome
  • The neuroscience behind psychedelic substances
  • Approaches to psychedelic-assisted therapy and outcomes
  • Risks, opportunities, and impact of psychedelic substances
  • Ethical aspects around the use of psychedelics
  • Research findings and depictions of psychedelic use and therapy.

Course structure

Teaching is given online at half-time in the form of lectures and seminars.

The teaching language is English.

After the course

After completing the course, you will have knowledge of the research on psychedelics and how it affects states of consciousness, emotions, cognition, and behaviour. The course also provides you with knowledge of psychedelic assisted therapy approaches and outcomes, its risks, opportunities, and related ethical aspects.

Entry requirements

För tillträde till kursen krävs att studenten har minst 150 högskolepoäng vari ingår ett examensarbete för en kandidatexamen i psykologi eller motsvarande, eller är antagen till ett Psykologprogram och har avklarat 150 högskolepoäng inom programmet. Muntlig och skriftlig språkfärdighet i engelska motsvarande Engelska 6/B från svenskt gymnasium är ett krav. Ekvivalering genomförs i enlighet med nationella riktlinjer.

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.

English language requirements

Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90.
