What Momo says about the Master's in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation
Momo from Germany
What is your educational background?
"My educational background is in political science and communication studies. During my studies, I focused on environmental politics and soon decided that I would like to learn more about the nexus between society and the environment."
Why did you choose Lund University? What were your expectations before coming to Sweden?
"I chose to apply to Lund University because it was one of the few universities in Europe that offered a Master's degree in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation. I liked how the programme is geared towards natural hazards, instead of focusing on hazards more broadly.
My biggest expectation for studying in Sweden was the absence of a competitive study atmosphere and it has been fulfilled beyond what I had imagined. The focus is on individual growth and improvement and not necessarily on receiving the highest mark. It is about what everyone can bring to the table. Especially in group discussions and group assignments. Group work in general was quite a surprise for me when coming to Sweden. From my previous studies, I was not used to such a great amount of group work. Although it can be really challenging at times, I have noticed a big improvement in my group work and collaboration skills, definitely useful skills to have."
Has the programme met your expectations so far?
"Yes, as the focus of this programme is more on natural than on technical hazards. Climate change is an important part of this programme too. As I was interested in the nexus between society and natural hazards, I really like how this programme focuses more on how to prevent, mitigate, prepare, manage and recover from disasters of which climate change mitigation and adaptation is definitely a part, rather than on detailed climate change science.
My expectations have been exceeded when it comes to the setup of the student group. The students studying this programme have a very diverse background both in terms of origin and educational background. I perceive this as a great asset of the program as it allows for a lot of interdisciplinary perspectives and learning."
What is the difference between being a student at LTH/Faculty of Engineering compared to your previous university studies?
"Perhaps it is because of the size of the programme but one of the biggest differences between being a student at LTH compared to my previous university is the friendly and non-hierarchical relationship that students and teachers have. All professors go by their first names and it is very easy to approach them if you need help. Additionally, they take student feedback very seriously when it comes to improving their lectures and seminars. I really appreciate that."
What do you do in your spare time? What is student life in Lund like?
"Lund is a very nice city to study in. It is small enough so you can easily bike everywhere and still has a very rich and diverse student life. There is something for everyone: sports, sustainable lifestyles, gardening, art and music. And in case there is something that Lund cannot provide, Malmö is close by to give you big city vibes."
Any other thoughts you have, that you think could be interesting to people applying for this programme?
"During the application process and the arrival period I really appreciated the thoughtful communication from the university, the faculty and the department. I was always provided with a lot of helpful information to navigate through these early times of study. Additionally, I like how much an effort is made by both teachers, students and alumni to keep in contact as a group engaged with this Master’s programme. The Alumni network that grew from these efforts provides a lot of opportunities for knowledge sharing and collaborations."
