What Annika says about the Master's in Architecture
Introducing Annika
Hi! My name is Annika and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Architecture. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund University because of its excellent reputation and ranking within the worldwide QS ranking, and for the historical campus, which is equipped with over twenty libraries."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"The Master’s programme in Architecture turned out to be even more versatile than I thought; with highly competent professors and a wide-ranged selection of courses it surpassed all my expectations."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The strong community within the studios and the constant interchange of knowledge between the students, as well as the professors and students are some of the many things that make the programme special. On top of that, the university is very well appointed with every tool and equipment an architecture student might need to succeed with studies and model making."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"I enjoy the flat hierarchies of the faculty, which makes it very easy to ask for help or advice, if needed. The lectures and teaching style are very inclusive and have never felt overwhelming. The professors always make sure that everyone feels comfortable within the course and have an open ear for suggestions and critique to improve the course."
How international is your programme?
"My Master’s programme is very international and therefore all the courses and lectures are held in English. More than half of our students come from a country other than Sweden, which is a very good way to make friends from all over the world. Not only does it help to give an intercultural understanding of different design approaches, but it also prepares you well for the international profession as an architect."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"In my experience, it is always best to gain practical experience by either working in an architecture office part-time or as an intern. It is always possible to contact the programme director and try to apply for an internship or job in an architecture office."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"The programme gives you the chance to improve your design methods expertise while providing you with a very good understanding of theoretical and written comprehension of architecture and art. The design courses offer excursions to different cities and countries to get to know different architecture styles, offices, etc., which is always a highlight in every semester."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"Lund University gives you multiple possibilities to partake in the international student life and has a wide range of nations, clubs, and student organisations that make the student life very exciting."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I enjoy spending my time outdoors - either by foot, by bike or by horse. Since the beach is not far from Lund, I also love to go swimming or go to the sauna. Lund University’s campus has a variety of historical buildings, which is perfect for me to practise my architectural sketching and photography."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"So far, the highlight has been all the incredible people in my studio that I got to meet and become friends with. It made moving to a different country so much easier and fun. It makes the university feel like home."
Do you have any advice for students who are considering coming to Lund?
"Just go for it! Nothing is ever as we imagine it to be, but it might be even better – I have no regrets about my decision to choose Lund University. If you’re having trouble deciding or need some insight into what being a student at Lund University is like, you can always reach out to me. Otherwise, I can always recommend listening to your gut feeling."
