Simulations of TEM images of nanoparticles embedded in amorphous ice

Author

Summary, in English

In order to study nanoparticles in an efficient way, new characterization methods has to be developed in parallel with the efforts to develop new preparation methods. One such characterization method is cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) which gives the possibility to image nanoparticles as they are in solution. The particle-containing solution is plunge-frozen, creating a thin frozen amorphous film, which can be transferred into the TEM for observation. The possibilities and limitations of such experiments with respect to atomic resolution has been investigated by image simulation. The study shows that using a combination of available state-of-the-art equipment and optimized the experimental conditions, it will be possible to push cryo-TEM of nanoparticles towards atomic resolution. This will combine information about particle-aggregation in solution with information about atomic structure of single particles
