Jag skall visa dig uppror i en handfull bär - revolution, karneval och uppror i The Hunger Games-trilogin
Author
Summary, in English
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the uprising depicted in Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games-trilogy. Using the ideas of carnival and vernacular humour presented by Mikhail Bakhtin a carnival perspective is applied to the course of events in Collin’s trilogy. Following a description of carnival as theory in the study of literature in general and more specifically children’s literature, the carnival imagery in three novels of The Hunger Games-trilogy (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay) is analyzed. Analyzing the trilogy as an example of Menippean satire shows how the dethroning of power by means of the people (and the protagonist of the series: Katniss) results in a successful uprising. The essay also contains a discussion of whether or not the uprising actually can be described as carnival, and how this affects the understating of The Hunger Games as young adult literature.
