Supply chain competence: A literature study

Author

Summary, in English

Purpose

Competence is a prerequisite to achieve a well-functioning and competitive supply chain (SC). The purpose of this review is to present an integrated view of the published literature on all the aspects and facets of supply chain competence, and to present a framework for classification and analysis to facilitate further study, practice and research.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured and systematic literature review was carried out, analysing a large number of refereed journal articles as well as books, conference proceedings and reports. An analysis in the form of content analysis and cross-tabulations of data is reported in this paper.

Findings

Supply chain competence is a relatively unexplored area, where the existing literature is fragmented and diversified. The key findings are: the field has emerged during the last decade; the publication sources are heavily spread among subject areas; research addresses many stakeholders, and the results strengthen the view of SC competence as a complex and encompassing area with a lack of consensus in the research community.

Originality/value

The research on supply chain competence is scarce, even though there is a body of literature emphasising it as a key success factor for supply chain excellence. This study provides a framework for the identification of the key content of the subject and assist in resolving the present confusion and complexity of the concept of SC competence.
