Tröskeltid: Kroppslighet, främmandeskap och identitet i graviditetsskildringar i samtida svensk prosa

Threshold-time: Pregnancy as Corporeality, Alienation and Identity in Contemporary Swedish Prose

Author

  • Christina Skagert

Summary, in English

This thesis investigates how pregnancy is mediated in contemporary swedish prose, through a close reading of the novels Hysteros (2013) by Helena Granström, Förvandling (2005) by Eva Adolfsson and Värddjuret (1995) by Marie Hermanson. Aspects of the theme of pregnancy that are especially emphasized are corporeality, alienation, the use and deconstruction of traditionally gendered dichotomies, problems of subjectivity and loss of identity.

The analysis uses texts from different theoretical fields of research in order to register a complex and nuanced of the theme. Especially important are Julia Kristeva, Rosi Braidotti, Christine Battersby and Jorun Solheim.

Using the theoretical texts, the analysis show how the theme constitutes a negotiation and questioning of culturally embedded constructions regarding subjectivity and identity, and calls for renewed perspectives on pregnancy, subjectivity and identity.
