Svenskämnet som demokrati- och värdegrundsämne

Author

  • Gun Malmgren

Summary, in English

The aim of this article is to illustrate the central position of Swedish as a schoolsubject with reference to questions of democracy, participation, and commonvalues. I argue that an expanded concept of language and text, which also comprises the aesthetic subjects, can change and broaden the subject of Swe-dish. In a historic perspective there has been a struggle between different ways of understanding and interpreting the aims of Swedish. Swedish was usually connected to Bildung, but an increasing number of teachers think that Bild-ung is only a rhetorical conception without realisation in practice. Today the old monoculture of the school and the traditional literary canon are compe-ting on a “school market” where difference and multitude are promoted aspositively charged concepts. I try the idea that if Swedish was opened to ananalysis of different kinds of cultural expressions it might contribute to a reflection that goes beyond the isolated school subject. This might lead to Swedish regaining its position as the central subject of Bildung in school, but with new emphasis on issues of democracy and common values.
