St. Bridget's Revelations to the Popes. An edition of the so-called Tractatus de summis pontificibus

Author

Summary, in English

St. Bridget of Sweden was very much concerned about the decay and corruption of the Church. She had many revelations in which Christ and St. Mary appeared condemning abuses and bad practices. After St Bridget's death some of the revelations to and concerning popes were published by her Spanish confessor, Alfonso, former Bishop of Jaén. The present book gives an edition of the original Alfonsine collection and makes a reappraisal of some much discussed questions: what was the content of the original edition? when was it compiled and for what purpose? why was it omitted in the early editions? to what extent did Alfonso revise St. Bridget's revelations?
