Looking backwards the history of Swedish is characterized by the growing impportance of written language, increased standardization of written and spoken language, growth of the Swedish vocabulary. It is hypothesized that this development will stagnate in the future. The hypothesis ist tested in a discussion against the background of a number of societal phenomena that can be expected to affect the uses of Swedish in the century to come.
