The literary remains of Esaias Tegnér (1782–1846)—poet, professor, bishop—include poems, letters, and speeches. These texts are have been published in a series of scholarly editions by Tegnérsamfundet. The last volumes of the series, which will contain sermons and other ecclesiastic speeches, are due to appear in the immediate future. This was the incentive for a symposium in November 2009, held at Växjö, the seat of Tegnér’s bishopric, where a number of Swedish scholars presented their studies on Tegnér, his works, and his influence on later Swedish literature. The focus was on the problems involved with editing older texts preserved in manuscripts and their importance for literary studies. The papers presented at the symposium are collected in this volume.
