The following document is used in the course Fire detection and suppression, which is given by the Department of Fire Safety Engineering at Lund University. In the first part of this document a short review of typical fire signatures, namely radiation, fire effluent gases, aerosol particles, temperature and sound is presented. Subsequent chapters include information about fire detectors, fire alarm systems, rules and regulations, design of fire alarm systems, activation of heat detectors and activation of smoke detectors.
