Det stora i det lilla: Om Endre Nemes' collage som förlagor till monumental utsmyckning 1965-85

Author

  • Jan-Gunnar Sjölin

Summary, in English

The investigation is confined to the last period of Endre Nemes' work, when after an abstract phase, he returned to creating deeply complex figurative works. During this period he consistently prepared his public works of art (as he also did with his paintings) by using collage on a small scale. The study examines how meaning and significance are generated in both material, plastic and iconic strata of the pictures and how the collage and the monumental work are related to each other. On all these levels, Nemes brings together disparate elements: materials, forms of expression and motifs with completely different origins. But it can also be demonstrated that these elements are united into pictorial structures characteristic of the artist. One recurrent feature that can be shown is the way in which the pictorial elements primarily represent themselves, as material objects, as plastic means of expression and as iconic representations. From this point of view, Nemes's work is revealed largely as dealing with man's creation of pictures throughout the ages.
