This paper elucidates the increased need of correct calculations of thermal bridges for low/near zero energy buildings. The variability of the results from calculations of transmission losses for a building can be large if the calculation method within EN ISO 13789:2007 is not fully understood. A survey has been carried out which shows that there are no consensus in Sweden regarding how to define the transmitting area for a 1-D building component as input for energy calculations and that there is confusion regarding the definition of thermal bridges. It seems that the most common misunderstanding regarding thermal bridges is that the geometrical effect; thermal bridges caused by the fact that they have different internal and external area.
