Studying environment and sustainability at Lund University

Lund University aims to be a driving force for sustainable development. In our teaching and research on environment and sustainability, we work to make an impact from the local to the global level. We equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for solving complex sustainability challenges and becoming agents of change and future leaders.

Lund University offers three international Master’s programmes in the subject area of environment and sustainability. The programmes are characterised by a global focus with worldwide recruitment of students and teachers from different disciplinary backgrounds that contribute to a unique multidisciplinary and multicultural classroom. There are of course also a great number of other educational programmes at various levels directly related to central sustainability challenges. In many programmes in fields such as engineering, law, economics and social sciences, it is also possible to specialise in issues connected to sustainable development.

The teaching in environment and sustainability is closely intertwined with research, often in collaboration with society. Sustainability research at Lund University is characterised by great diversity and involves numerous disciplines across all faculties. Research stretches from climate and resilience, energy systems, circular economy, urban transitions, land use governance, biodiversity and ecosystem services to consumption, policy intervention and sustainable business models. There is also a strong focus on issues of social sustainability and governance challenges in different parts of the world.

Many departments are active in this research, along with several interdisciplinary departments or centres such as the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE); Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS); Environmental and Energy Systems Studies; and the Centre for Climate and Environment.
