What Giovani says about the Master's in Wireless Communications
Giovani from Brazil
Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and your educational background?
I graduated in Electrical Engineering in 2021, from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. During my studies, I started to develop an interest in areas related to radio frequency engineering and wireless communications. Unfortunately, these areas were not focused on in the courses I took. In 2018/2019, I decided to come to Lund as an exchange student as my university had relations with Lund University. During that period, I took the opportunity to study as many subjects related to wireless communications as possible. I went back to Brazil and started working in areas related to hardware and, later on, radios. Now I am back in Lund, to finish my Master’s studies.
Why did you choose Lund University and why did this particular programme appeal to you?
"Lund University has a well-structured course programme. If you follow it and study properly, you should have no gaps in your knowledge or skills. You will be prepared for industry or doctoral studies."
About the programme and teaching style
Why should prospective students choose this programme? Do you have a favourite course?
"Whether you are choosing the research area or the industry, there is an exciting future for the use of wireless communications and the new technologies that have emerged (or become widely available) recently, such as massive MIMO and AI."
What do you think of the teaching style and the way of studying here? What are the lecturers and professors like?
"The teaching style varies from one professor to another, naturally. The pace is fast as the semester is divided into two parts, but I think that is a lot better than having many subjects simultaneously. Additionally, there is a lot of support from the professors and their assistants in help sessions and exercise classes. Exercise lists are well organised and the exams are very coherent to the course material presented."
What is the academic/learning environment like?
"Depending on the subject, there are usually lectures, exercise classes and laboratory sessions."
What is studying in Sweden like compared to studying in other countries you studied in?
"I notice a lot more support here than in my home country, the exercise classes and help sessions are new to me."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies so far?
"Yes, many subjects require such experience and I think the university provides it very well."
Have you had any opportunities for networking within the programme? Do you work with companies?
"Yes, I am working part-time. Many students decide to stay in Sweden to look for a job as there are many opportunities in the areas around Lund."
Being an international student in Lund
What it is like to be an international student at Lund University and how international is your programme?
"We are in contact with different cultures daily. I think that is a very important and healthy experience as we are all living in a world that is becoming more and more mixed and diverse."
How do you like living in Sweden? Did you feel welcome here? What surprised you most about Sweden?
"Despite the rain in the autumn and the darkness in winter, I enjoy living here. People are kind and willing to help you with whatever you need. I felt welcome coming here – the university administration does a very good job in that aspect."
If you were to recommend the area where you live to someone, what would you say?
"My answer would depend on the age of the person and their personality. For people who are graduating or are under 23 (more or less), I would definitely recommend Lund or Malmö. The reason for that is that Malmö is a city with other activities not only related to student life, where you can relate more to people your age. The proximity to Copenhagen also opens up several possibilities for activities like museums, concerts and other types of entertainment."
What are the highlights of your time here so far?
"I met people who like to play football and music, as I do. These leisure activities are always nice to have to get the energy to keep on with my routine of studies and work. I hope to play a concert in a venue in Copenhagen someday!"
Do you have any advice for other students who are considering coming to Lund?
"Engage in social activities and be active in looking for friends. In my opinion, having good friends is what makes you feel at home."
