What Manogna says about the Master's in Production and Materials Engineering
Manogna from India
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated from the programme in June 2021."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"Currently, I work as a Product Requirement Engineer (PRE) at IKEA of Sweden in Älmhult, Sweden."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"I began working at IKEA as an intern through an internship programme called 'Jobbsprånget', and then this internship successfully transitioned into a full-time job opportunity. The duration of the internship was 4 months, but I ended up finding a job within 2.5 months."
Favourite thing about your job?
"For me, working at IKEA has been a truly enriching experience, and what I appreciate most is the vibrant multicultural environment it fosters. With its presence spanning nearly 59 countries and boasting 462 stores as of 2023, the diversity at IKEA extends far beyond its products. My everyday work ensures that I encounter coworkers from various corners of the world. Within the realm of research and development at IKEA, where I am actively involved in testing and experimentation, I find immense satisfaction in pursuing work that aligns seamlessly with my interests."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"In a world with numerous competitors, IKEA distinguishes itself through the unparalleled quality of its products. What sets IKEA apart is not only our commitment to rigorous engineering testing in product development, but also our unwavering dedication to sustainability. As an engineer at IKEA, my daily endeavours are centred around crafting superior products that not only meet customer expectations but also prioritise environmental well-being. Every decision we make is a conscious effort towards eco-friendly and sustainable solutions, ensuring that our innovations contribute positively to both the customer experience and the broader global environment. The seemingly small decisions we engineers make within large corporations like IKEA, have a considerable influence on the world at large."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"The course Material and Process Selection is something that I widely use in my work today. As the name suggests, the software CES EduPack lets the user analyse the material suitable for defined purposes. The programme also provided training on teamwork, deadlines and deliverables, which helped prepare me well for the industry in a broader sense."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund University/The Faculty of Engineering (LTH)? What were the highlights of your time at Lund?
"What I miss the most is being a full-time student."
How international was your programme?
"The 2019–2021 batch involved 30 students from 11 Countries."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"My Master’s thesis focused on drawing a correlation between microstructural and mechanical properties in NbC-reinforced Hadfield steel composites. I am proud to have collaborated with Sandvik SRP, Svedala for my thesis.
Why do you think prospective students should choose the Production & Materials Engineering programme?
"For students with a deeper interest in sustainable manufacturing with a blend in materials engineering, I would definitely recommend taking up the Production & Materials Engineering programme. The programme offers interesting electives in various materials which help students to design their coursework in a more challenging way."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"Lund and the university itself are wonderful opportunities. Just like the city easily connects us to the entire Europe, so does the university with several Big Science facilities like MAX IV, RISE etc. The professors at Lund University are extremely skilled and act as powerful source points for enthusiastic students. I would encourage students to share their ideas with professors who can connect them to platforms of potential opportunity."
