What Faruk says about the Master's in Logistics and Supply Chain Management
Faruk from Sweden
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in May 2022."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"I am currently working as a Project Supply Manager at Tetra Pak, part of the North European Market. I am based in Lund, however, working with project procurement in UK/Ireland while leading several local categories in the Lund factory. Tetra Pak is a world-leading food processing and packaging solutions company. The company works closely with customers and suppliers by providing safe, innovative and environmentally sound products that each day meet the needs of hundreds of millions of people in more than 160 countries."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"My journey with Tetra Pak started already during my Master's Thesis. I had together with my former classmate the opportunity to do our thesis at Tetra Pak, within the Key Components Team. While doing my Master's Thesis, I found a vacant position within the department of Supply Management. Specialisation in Supply Management was an obvious choice as I wanted to expand my knowledge within the field of procurement. With this said, my first job with Tetra Pak as a supplier coordinator was already secured during my thesis work."
Favourite thing about your job?
"My favourite thing about the job is the opportunity to be surrounded by inspiring and friendly colleagues that are there to support with whatever is needed. I also have the privilege to meet and build strong business partnerships together with suppliers that are essential for the future success of Tetra Pak. A workday is never the same and you always learn something new. Every day consists of new challenges that you together as a team will be faced to resolve. Being part of a global company opens the possibility to further develop your professional skills. You will have opportunities to try other positions if interested. Working for a global company means that you most likely will be exposed to a lot of different IT systems, hence an opportunity to broaden your software knowledge. What makes me love my job is the awareness that the company I currently work at contributes to a better world while I individually continue to have the opportunity to curiously develop my professional career within the food industry."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"Tetra Pak’s purpose is to make food safe and available everywhere while promising to protect what’s good. As responsible for my local categories and especially the laboratory category in Lund, I ensure that Tetra Pak has a procurement strategy that is aligned with the company's overall purpose and vision. The laboratory in Lund, also seen as the largest facility for research and development aligned with a procurement strategy for this specific category, enables Tetra Pak to have the correct consumables as well as the right instruments to develop more sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging solutions."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"I would say that the cultural diversity during my university time was useful as it gave me different perspectives from people with different backgrounds and cultures working together. We tend to get more exposed to varying viewpoints and ideas, which helps us become accustomed to hearing and sharing different perspectives and presenting our ideas. Hence working for a global company with 25000 employees around the world is not making any difference in comparison to university time. The Swedish educational system puts emphasis on students solving complex problems requiring an analytical and holistic mindset, which is a benefit when entering the 'real world'. This Master's programme enables students to have up-to-date knowledge regarding the trending technology within the field of logistics and supply chain from well-known international researchers in Lund."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund University/LTH? What were the highlights of your time at Lund?
"I mostly miss my former class, while at the same time the surroundings of other students and teachers that I have had the opportunity to meet. Highlights were definitely all the inspiring guest lectures from companies such as UNICEF, IKEA, Tetra Pak and many other global companies that are present around the area of Lund. Lund University also offers several various outdoor activities. As a former football player, I had the opportunity to join Hallands Nations Football Club, where I now have the majority of my friends."
How international was your programme?
"The programme was very international. My class consisted of people from all around the world, from China to the USA. I myself are born in Sweden but my parents are from Bosnia & Hercegovina. Irrespective of whether you are a local or a foreign student, you will still benefit from the professional expertise, intercultural exposure, and enhanced career opportunities from an international Master's programme entail."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"The focus of the Master's thesis was to develop a forecasting model for Tetra Pak’s OEM Components department based on historical sales data, installation project size and components category. The new model that we developed during our thesis represents a standardised and reliable method to forecast OEM Components. Key properties such as Easy-To-Use, Scalable, Reliable and Flexible are represented in the new model. The model developed is used to forecast OEM Components between Tetra Pak and one of their biggest suppliers. This thesis has contributed to overall improvement of their supply chain performance, thus increasing overall responsiveness and product availability assurance while achieving optimised inventory."
Why do you think prospective students should choose the Logistics & Supply Chain Management programme?
"Many of the teachers are internationally acclaimed researchers who provide students with comprehensive knowledge and pragmatic skills which are valuable for students studying this programme. The programme has a cross-functional focus, providing the students with an education in the broad logistics and supply chain management field. Ranging from production planning and purchasing to warehouse, packaging and distribution, the programme provides an understanding of how different functions interlink and how they are affected by decisions made in other parts of the value chain. The programme gives strategic and inter-organisational perspectives as well as operational skills."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"My advice to future students arriving in Lund is to enjoy these (for the majority) last two years as a student. However, these last two years will be packed with both fun as well as challenging occasions. With that said, my advice is to find a balance between education and private life, while enjoying Lund’s various student nations. Good luck!"
