What Vinodhini says about the Master's in Wireless Communications
Vinodhini from India
What year did you graduate?
"I graduated in the summer of 2022."
What is your current job and where is it located?
"I work as a consultant and RF verification and certification Engineer under the umbrella of Ericsson AB and TUV SUD in Stockholm, Sweden."
How did you find your job and how long did it take?
"I immediately got a job offer at the company where I did my thesis. I presented my thesis in June and started my current job in August. "
Favourite thing about your job?
"I like that the knowledge is being transferred through 2-way communication and that the work is very flexible. Most importantly, I appreciate the independence of being able to make my own decisions."
How are you changing the industry or the world (in a large or small way)?
"Every new Radio or the Baseband that is being developed by Ericson AB must get approval from the government. So, as an RF verification and certification Engineer, I verify all the conformance tests and submit reports to UKAS or SWEDAC (The national accreditation body for Sweden). This is one of the most important steps for the product delivery."
What was especially useful about the programme that you use in your everyday work?
"The consistency and structure of the Wireless programme has helped me in every situation in my role today. The progression from the basics of wireless communications to the more advanced courses helped me to understand the concept and the connection between them."
What do you miss most from your time at Lund University/The Faculty of Engineering (LTH)? What were the highlights of your time at Lund?
"Mostly, I miss the classroom lectures and the group projects with friends in the LTH library (which sometimes took day and night to complete). During my first year of studies, it was COVID and we were not allowed to attend lectures or interact in groups. Somehow, we overcame the hard times and enjoyed ourselves limitlessly during the second year.
I could say almost everything was a highlight for me in Lund because it was my first time abroad. Lund is a student-friendly town where you can get to know yourself by interacting with others. I also volunteered as an International Mentor which helped me to grow my social and professional network."
What was the focus of your thesis?
"My focus was to design a dual-band single polarized patch antenna for the 5G mmWave frequencies and gain radiation patterns for the required frequencies at 28GHz and 39GHz. These were further simulated in a MATLAB link-level simulator to analyse the performance of 5G mmWave handheld devices in a nonstationary radio environment. This was done to obtain omnidirectional coverage in desired directions."
Why do you think prospective students should choose this programme?
"The Wireless programme is very diverse and the way it is structured helps students to understand the different levels of wireless communication needed to provide solutions to some of the industry's most complex problems. This allows the students to choose their desired career path."
Do you have any advice for prospective students coming to Lund?
"Always stay focused and deterministic towards your goal. Start looking for opportunities from day one as this will save time when approaching the end of the programme."
How international was your programme?
"As far as I remember, there were 16 international students from all around the globe. Many students were from China and India and some were from the Middle East and Mexico. Even the professors came from different countries, such as Germany, the US, China, and India. Despite coming from such different backgrounds, I never experienced any miscommunications and we always managed to create a good bond."
